Sex and the City Characters as NYC Restaurants
I’ve watched Sex and the City no less than five times and I’m a freak when it comes to knowing restaurants, I don’t know why it never occurred to me to put the two together! While there are many articles on the restaurants and places featured on the show, I figured this was a fun way of writing about SATC where it’s more relevant and useful. Each of the characters have such strong and defined personalities, yet it wasn’t easy to have to get in their head and totally imagine what restaurant would resonate with them. Still, that’s exactly what made it even more fun!
Carrie - Frenchette

We all know Carrie had a certain fascination with France and was also always up to date with the latest, hottest trends and places. This restaurant is exactly that. It opened in TriBeCa in April and already it’s impossible to get a reservation. In a New York Times article, it is described as not fake French, but not the real thing either and that instantly reminded me of Carrie.
Miranda - Roman’s
Casual yet high-quality, the farm-to-table concept of this Italian spot in Brooklyn reminded me of Miranda’s straightforward and no-bullshit attitude. The food is traditional yet never boring and always with a bit of a kick, just like Miranda.
Charlotte - Le Bilboquet

I didn’t even have to think about which restaurant represented Charlotte best. Le Bilboquet could not be a more perfect fit. It’s a classic of the Upper East Side and has an extensive and quite fun art collection displayed on their wall which Charlotte would know all of the details of. Like Charlotte every now and then reveals her wild side, on occasion Le Bilboquet’s ambiance is known to get on party mode.
Samantha - Indochine

Lover of all things scene-y and “exotic”, Samantha would definitely be an Indochine regular, just like Warhol and Basquiat were. It could be said that both Samantha’s and Indochine’s “peak” was in the 80s and 90s, yet they are both NYC icons that we know are still chic, stylish and relevant.
Big - Gotham Bar and Grill

John is definitely the most traditional and classic out of all of the characters. Gotham Bar and Grill would without a doubt be one of his favorite restaurants. The space is simple yet grand, with a stunning bar. While they both may sound conventional, neither lacks elegance and are a big part of the New York City social scene.
Aidan - JG Melon

Aidan is also pretty traditional but in a totally different way than Big is. I can see JG Melon being one of Aidan’s go-to places because just like his infamous leather chair, it is old and simple but still great quality and comforting. Aidan was always clear on what he wanted and JG Melon’s straight-forward menu perfectly resonates with that.
Steve - MeMe’s Diner

An updated, good-food diner is just the kind of place Steve would frequent. Located in Prospect Park, MeMe’s stands by the idea that “cheese balls pair well with your martini, that eating out should be simple, and that you always have room for dessert.” and I feel just that one sentence would have Steve completely sold. What’s better than a place that offers good drinks and influences both international ingredients with things such as potato chips in their simple-yet-not-so-simple meals?
PS: While it’s fun to imagine up places the Sex and the City characters would have gone, I can’t write this post without mentioning one of the most important places they actually did go, which is their go-to coffee shop, the famous The Coffee Shop in Union Square. It was founded by a group of models in the 90s and was the It spot for fashion people and hip New Yorkers. Unfortunately they have announced that it is closing in October, so if you’ve never been, make sure you get the chance to!
